We’ve become all too familiar with the catch phrase “there’s an app for that.” It’s become cliché and in my opinion a bit worn out but let’s forget about the toys; the light saber apps and the Samuel L. Jackson soundboard and think about the real possibilities for mobile apps. Let’s talk about mobile apps and Healthcare. According to new data from research firm Frost & Sullivan, the mobile health app market will grow to $392 million over the next years. That’s an expected 70% increase.

What does this mean for us? Better health care for one. One mobile app, Diagnotes On Call, will improve the effectiveness and efficiency of after-hours patient care by providing patient history to physicians on call. This app will inform physicians of which prescriptions a patient is on, their allergies and the patient’s history. This is vital information for the physician to provide safe and capable care and this new mobile app bridges the gap to provide such information after hours and on-call.

There are also healthcare apps which focus on continued medical education so students and physicians who want a refresher course can conveniently learn on the go with interactive mobile apps. One example is ECG Notes which offers a presentation of the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular system and includes over 100 ECG rhythms and pacemaker rhythms. There are additional apps such as Davis’ Drug Guide for Nurses with Integrated Calculators so nurses and physicians can quickly calculate the proper dosage of medicine to be administered to a patient based on age and weight. The list of apps includes many more and will continue to grow over the years.

Sharing patient data via mobile apps may cause questions or concerns as to whether the patient data is secure and compliant with HIPAA guidelines. Mobile healthcare apps now allow you to send and receive the HIPAA Privacy Notice form electronically to a mobile device. The patient can acknowledge receipt of the policy form and provide an electronic signature all from their mobile device. AT&T recently announced two new mobile security services for healthcare providers: security services for tablets and secure messaging services that enable providers to send encrypted information in HIPAA-compliant ways. This includes, but is not limited to, appointment reminders, lab results, and payment notices. Part of the offering includes remote wipe capability, so the device can be erased if it is lost or stolen helping to keep your data secure.

So, the next time you reach for your mobile phone to play ‘Words with Friends’ remember your mobile device is not just a social communication instrument or ‘toy’, but rather a strong tool in the Healthcare community connecting physicians and patients, improving education and so much more.
