What does certification mean for a Health Care Provider?  Using a successfully certified EHR technology is a core requirement for achieving Meaningful Use.  It also assures health care providers that the EHR system they are using has all of the capabilities the provider needs to participate in the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs.

Meaningful Use Stage 2 Timeline

The idea of Meaningful Use was developed by the National Quality Forum (NQF) in an effort to create a set of national priorities that would help healthcare performance-improvement efforts. In 2008 the NQF released a report which identified the areas they felt needed to be improved. Their ideas included many obvious areas such as: improved population health, coordination of care, improved safety, increased efficiency, reduction of racial disparities, and patient engagement. Privacy and security were later added to this list. These ideals were used as a framework framework to determine the Meaningful Use of EMR/EHRs.

Technology and progress go hand in hand! Earlier this month a rover, called Curiosity, landed on Mars. This first of its kind event made headlines and provided the world with images within two minutes of its landing, this magnificent event marks the beginning of a new era in technology and science. As we read and hear about this form of technology we embrace it and look forward to more but as soon as Facebook makes a change to its format we complain in hopes that the change will be reverted... until we finally get accustomed to it and eventually see the benefits. When technology interferes with our daily routines we are often quick to dismiss it as a waste of time. At times we tend to ignore the benefits and push it away for as long as possible, to avoid having to change our ways. In healthcare we have finally reached that “as long as possible” stage.

Affordable Care Act and Technology

In March of 2010 President Obama signed the Affordable Care Act that would be a new statute in the United States that would be rolled out over the next few years and would completely change the outlook of healthcare.  From 2010 to 2020 numerous provisions are put into effect and several existing policies are to be affected.  With the provisions in the Affordable Care Act being enforced there is a significant impact on the health IT side of things as well.

Implications of the ACA on Physicians' Practices

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) will result in an increase of over 30 million Americans getting health insurance over the next 10 years. What does that mean for small businesses and physician’s offices? The increase in insured patients means more money available to the healthcare system, higher employment rates in the healthcare industry and  expanded adoption of healthcare IT processes.
