A major issue for the U.S. health care system will be accommodating the needs of the estimated thirty-two million Americans who will gain insurance coverage under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) over the next ten years. For hospitals, a traditional response to increased demand might be to add resources, such as more staff and more beds.  However, research has demonstrated that large gains in efficiency can be made through streamlining patient flow and redesigning care processes.  Therefore, business as usual is probably not the best approach as we move into the future of Healthcare Reform.  Fortunately, the ACA lays the groundwork to help support Healthcare IT to foster such change.

Any type of client portal allows access to some type of client information and resources through a web-based interface. Typically that information includes sensitive financial data such as credit card numbers and account balances. Research shows that 81 percent of physicians are using smartphones or tablet devices.  With devices getting smaller in size and much more important in information, the chances to lose or have a device stolen grow larger every day. One important aspect of mobile devices being used in a hospital setting is encryption.  The ONC recently found that mobile phones and devices are severely under protected.  Most mobile devices do not even meet 40 percent of the security requirements, which includes encrypted information.  The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, also known as HIPPAA, has provided security guidance around remote use and encryption of data at rest.
