Employee Appreciation

Do You Appreciate Your Employees? Does It Show? Is employee appreciation necessary? What are ways I can recognize my employees for doing a good job? What if I don’t have a lot of additional money to recognize my employees? I have often wondered if my boss ever had these thoughts, have you?

Everyone needs positive reinforcement, i.e. appreciation. Employee appreciation comes in all forms and they don’t have to cost money. A sincere thank you goes a long way. A simple shout-out publicly or a Starbucks gift card can go far.

Employee appreciation isn’t one size fits all! The key is to know who you are surrounded by. There are some people who are not comfortable with public praise. Or giving a StarBucks gift card to someone who doesn’t drink coffee isn’t much of a reward. Giving a free car wash to a guy who rides the bus to work, isn’t much in the way of appreciation. That shows you are totally not in touch with your people!

So how do you make employee appreciation meaningful?

The importance of employee appreciation is that it is meaningful to the person receiving the appreciation. So, knowing what would be meaningful to your employee means knowing the employee! It will take some effort on your part. But in order for employee appreciation to be effective, it needs to be genuine and appropriate for the person you wish to give it to.

Here are some examples of employee appreciation:

  • Give Shout-Outs. …
  • Offer fun projects or professional/personal development opportunities. …
  • Take them to lunch. …
  • Distribute non-cash rewards. …
  • Loosen the reins. …
  • Throw a competition, party, or potluck. …
  • Encourage peer-to-peer recognition.
  • Simply say thank you

Whichever way you opt to offer employee appreciation, be sure it is meaningful. I once received my annual increase in a hand-written note tossed on my desk by my boss. The hand-written note obviously took some time, but to toss it on my desk was not very personable. It showed a genuine lack of appreciation for my hard work all year.

Be sure you recognize how your efforts will be received. Take the time to be genuine, it won’t go unnoticed. Your genuine appreciation will be met with loyalty and motivation to continue their good work. Employee appreciation, motivation and encouragement will never be a waste of time or money!
